Windows 10 Will Come With Built-in Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor Authentication

Security breach is quite common these days, every now and then there comes a news that millions of passwords or credit card information has been stolen. Microsoft is addressing this increase in security threat and wants to provide a product that is safe and user will feel safe using it. For this purpose, Microsoft is moving from Single-factor authentication to Two-factor Authentication in its new Windows 10 which will be built-in feature. Microsoft’s Jim Alkove said in a blog post that this will remove the need of having other security hardware for protection and the device itself will become one of Two factor authentication. The second factor for the Windows 10 will be a PIN code or a biometric for instance, Fingerprint. Alkove said that this means that the attacker will need to have the PIN along with physical device or Biometric information of the user to access target account.

Two-factor Authentication

The user can use a physical device like their smartphone to register it and it will work as their mobile credential. The user will be able to access their Computer and web only when their smartphone is nearby. The Wi-Fi or Bluetooth of the Smartphone will work as remote smartcard for authentication. Though many services already provide Two-Factor authentication, so it’s not a new thing that Microsoft is offering this feature. They are actually catching up to others at this point.
