It has been reported that U.S Marshal Service has been using
Fake cell towers equipped in airplanes to track people. For the past seven years, Law enforcement has been
using the technology known as “dirtboxes”.
It’s a two-foot-square device that act as a cell phone tower and tricks cell
phones into sending their unique registration information to them so they could
detect any individual phone. It is claimed that at least 5 of these
dirtbox-equipped planes operate over metropolitan-area airports every day with
a range that could cover almost all of the US population. Thousands of cell phone
data can be collected with just one flight and can pinpoint the location of an
individual within 3 meters and even in a specific room.

But you don’t have to worry about it being collecting your
information. The main reason why this technology is used is to locate phones of
individuals who are under investigation like murder suspect or drug dealers.
But the source says that they only collect information from suspect cell phones
and all the other information collected from non-suspects are let go. Revised
of these dirtboxes can do some extra things too, like jamming signals and even
pull out text messages and photos from a phone. We still don’t know if the
revised one is being used in the US or not but in other countries, it is being used for
locating suspected terrorists. It should be noted that this act is completely
legal in US so you should keep this in mind before thinking against it.
