
It is quite hard to keep a large building cool during summer
when temperature is really high. The building soaks up heat from outside and building
dwellers also have to deal with heat generated from inside. Due to combination
of both sources of heat, air conditions need to be turned on for a long time to
handle all of it. Some Researchers from Stanford University has created a new
solution for this issue to keep things cool in hot summer. They have created a
super thin coating that will radiate heat from inside and reflect the sunlight
by 97%. Researchers are calling this new technique photonic radiating cooling.
The material consists of total 8 layers and is just 1.8 micros
thick. Seven layers of the coating consist of silicon dioxide and hafnium oxide
over a thin layer of silver. Though the new technique seems quite good and its
implementation can be quite effective, but still it is nowhere near commercial
use yet. The main issue is that the current prototype is hardly a size of a
personal pizza, which means it cannot be applied in a real-world scenario.
However, the good news is that the current production facility has enough
capability to create enough photonic
radiating cooling to achieve desired results.
