Topaz the 500-plus megawatt solar energy plant is currently
ready and running in the US. The plant is located in San Luis Obispo County in
California Plain and it took over two years to create this plant. It is
currently the Largest Solar power farm in the whole world. It might seem small
in picture, but in actual it consists of total nine million solar panels which
have been distributed over an area of 9.5 square miles. The plant has been
manufactured by First Solar and cost up to $2.5 billion. With the help of this
solar energy plant 550 megawatts of electricity will be generated which could
provide power to 160,000 houses. It should be noted that the plant has been
created over a disturbed farm land and is no way near the sensitive areas such
as Carrizo Plain National Monument.
However, this farm will have quite a small time in the spotlight
of being the Worlds Largest Solar Farm as in next year Solar Start will be
completed and working, which will be able to generate 579 megawatts. Though it
is quite impressive but still there is a chance it might get better as
researcher just revealed a way to increase the efficiency of solar power panels
by 20% with the use of quasi-random patterns etched into Blu-ray discs.
