Chromebooks are replacing iPads in Classrooms of US

Apple and Microsoft devices have always dominated the US schools, but for the first time Chromebook has now become the most popular device when it comes to use in US Schools. According to IDC statistics, the total number of Chromebooks shipped to US schools is 715,500 in Third quarter of 2014 while iPads total 702,000. The main factor which made such a huge difference is definitely the price difference between devices. As Chromebook’s starting price is $199 compared to Apple’s higher-priced tablets which has a starting price of $379. Not to mention, Chromebooks integrated keyboard also makes it quite appealing. However, Apple also supplies keyboards with iPads to some schools but they are also separately charging for it. The report also states that one fourth of the Educational market is now being dominated by the Chromebooks.

This doesn’t mean Apple never tried to dominate this market. In 2013, Apple tried to make a deal with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to make iPad available for every student, but the deal didn’t get approved as students somehow found a way to bypass the restrictions imposed on the iPad. IDC also revealed that Apple had a first full year decline in the shipment of iPad.
