Google Is Trying To Gain Back Its Users Stolen By Yahoo

Google

Google is definitely the most used Search Engine in the world, but that doesn’t mean they will stop caring about anyone stealing their tiny piece of share. So Google will have to respond to all moves made by its competitors. Last year Yahoo managed to win place in Firefox as default browser and also gained some users through the win.  However, now Google is trying to win back its users by telling them to give up on Yahoo and get back to Google. It has been found that if you enter Google.com while using Firefox there comes a pop up that users should set Google as their default browser. Users can just click Sure to set Google as default browser or just click on No thanks to leave it.

Google also encouraged users of Firefox to go back to Google and also told the whole process in a tweet. All these are efforts are being made to drive away Firefox users from Yahoo. Reports suggest that this Yahoo and Mozilla deal has helped Yahoo gain some market share from Google. We will still have to wait for few months in order to see how this new strategy of Google will work out.

In North America, Yahoo is now the Default Search Engine for Firefox

search engine provider

Mozilla has been quite fast about changing its Default search engine provider to Yahoo. For the first time in many years, Google has been replaced by Yahoo with Firefox 34 update. Though it is still limited to North America, but it means it will soon be applied everywhere. Now North American users will be asked to set Yahoo as their default browser when they update to Firefox 34. Of course, users will still have the option to keep the later one if they are more comfortable with it.

For others, with the Firefox 34 update they will get an improved version of search bar where they would be able to search within other third-party website like Wikipedia, Amazon or Twitter with Firefox’s latest one click search. This new feature will help save time while searching results from other websites. Furthermore, Mozilla’s latest Hello Chat client will also be available in the latest version of Firefox. It’s a free service which lets the user have video or audio calls with other people right from their browser. In Firefox 34 Mozilla has also disabled SSL 3.0 due to the vulnerability in the design of SSL 3.0 revealed by Google.

Mozilla signs a 5 year contract with Yahoo to make it the Default Search Engine in Firefox

default search engine

Google will no longer be the Default search engine in Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla has announced a five-year deal with Yahoo in which the yahoo search engine will replace the Google search engine as default search engine. Mozilla CEO Chris Beard said on this matter that Google is being replaced with an enhanced version of Yahoo which will start in this December. According to Beard, the new Yahoo Search engine will provide a new experience with clean and modern interface. In the agreement, Yahoo also agreed to support Do Not Track (DNT) in Firefox. It is quite a good move from Yahoo as Yahoo stopped supporting Do Not Track in the past may.

It should be mentioned that Yahoo is only being set as a default search engine. Other search engines like Google, Bing, Amazon, eBay, DuckDuckGo, Twitter and Wikipedia will still be available as other search options. We still don’t know why this change has been made and Beard also didn't elaborate why they made such a switch. Beard only noted that as they are non-profit they need to make different choices. However, the only good reason for such switch seems to be a better offer from Yahoo. Yahoo must have made a better offer to Mozilla to get the top spot.

Yahoo Search Started Automatic Encryption Plugging All Security Holes

As promised by Marissa Mayer CEO of Yahoo, The company today has started to plug in all the security holes in its search engine and from today onward all the searches done on Yahoo home page will use automatic encryption which will automatically route all searches through a secure server. This all rerouting will be done at the back end and users will be using the search engine normally. According to the CEO, " There is nothing more important to us than protecting our users data". This automatic encryption will only be available to US site for now, other UK and Japan version will soon be starting the rerouting process. So US users feel free to search on Yahoo as there will no monitoring done by NSA on you now. Below is official press release of the company posted today on Yahoo.

Yahoo search engine got safer

Press Release

As you know, there have been a number of reports over the last six months about the U.S. government secretly accessing user data without the knowledge of tech companies, including Yahoo. I want to reiterate what we have said in the past: Yahoo has never given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency. Ever.
There is nothing more important to us than protecting our users’ privacy. To that end, we recently announced that we will make Yahoo Mail even more secure by introducing https (SSL - Secure Sockets Layer) encryption with a 2048-bit key across our network by January 8, 2014.
Today we are announcing that we will extend that effort across all Yahoo products. More specifically this means we will:
  • Encrypt all information that moves between our data centers by the end of Q1 2014;
  • Offer users an option to encrypt all data flow to/from Yahoo by the end of Q1 2014;
  • Work closely with our international Mail partners to ensure that Yahoo co-branded Mail accounts are https-enabled.
As we have said before, we will continue to evaluate how we can protect our users’ privacy and their data. We appreciate, and certainly do not take for granted, the trust our users place in us.

Yahoo has bought one more startup this year named SkyPhrase, which is a small startup operated by only 4 people. On Monday, Yahoo announced this news officially and told in a blog post that in the coming days , Yahoo web searches will be more improved and will provide better results to the people on search engines. People who are in a hurry and use disjoint words while searching, SkyPhrase software will understands what the query is about and interpret into data base friendly language. Yahoo hasn’t revealed any financial details about the deal but this acquisition will soon be revealed with more detailed information.

Yahoo bought SkyPhrase startup

We are excited to join Yahoo Labs to continue to work on our shared vision of making computers deeply understand people's natural language and intentions,We can’t wait to take things to the next level together."

Yahoo Auctioned 100 Premium Domain Names For A Week Starting From November 14

Today , Yahoo has announced a week of auction in which it will be selling a list of 100 premium domain names starting from November 14 which will end on November 21. The prices for the domains are set according to thier popularity ranging from as low as $1000 to as high as $1.5 million. Yahoo is selling these domains through Sedo , which is the largest domain trading platform in UK. Currently there are 29 domains which are listed , and more are about to come in few days. In the current list of 29 domains , Cyberjokes.com and batoota.com are the cheapest auctioned domains starting from $1,000 to $5,000. Where as , the expensive one is av.com which is auctioned for the price starting from $ 1 million to $ 1.5 million. Below is the complete list of 29 domain names:

Yahoo auctioned 100 domains names for a week

Yahoo explained the reason why the company choose to do the auction:

When you’re a company that’s been around as long as Yahoo, there are lots of fun things that you stumble across. This year, we found a huge list of domain names that the company has owned for quite some time.

As we discussed what to do with them, it became obvious that it was time to set them free…back into the wild of the Internet. Surely, creative people, businesses and entrepreneurs could come up with something great to do with them. They could even spark some brand new ideas or companies.

If Yahoo manages to sell all the domains , so the company will have a healthy amount of money which can be utilized for company benefits.

Yahoo Stock Jumped 5% And Beats Earning Estimates In Q3

It is a surprise that Yahoo stock has got shot by 5% yesterday with an increase in its estimated earnings in the third quarter. Its a celebration day for Yahoo because the company was facing major loss in its stock and earning since last year. Analyst estimated that Yahoo stock would sell for $0.33 per share on revenue of $1.08 billion , but the company went beyond the expectation and sold the stock for $0.34 per share on revenue of $1.08 billion. The stock's increase appears to be driven more by an announcement in the report that Yahoo will be able to hold onto more shares of Alibaba, the Chinese eCommerce giant it has a significant stake in, after the company goes public in the coming months.

Yahoo stock jumped by 5%

Still, there are several red flags in the earnings report. Yahoo's overall revenue declined by 1% year-over-year due to continued struggles to revive its ad business. The number of ads sold in the quarter increased by just 1% year-over-year while the price per ad decreased by 7%. Display ad revenue for the quarter was down 7%. Yahoo stock price topped $30 last month for the first time since early 2008 and has since gone as high as $35, well above the $33 per share that Microsoft offered to acquire it for in 2008. These ups and downs in Us stock market are very common and not only Yahoo , many online companies face these revenue tweaks, but a successful company is the one who maintains their stock price to same level each year with only minor ups and downs which are bearable.
